This month I wanted to try something a little different. I figured since this month’s travel destination is going to be London, England I thought for the month of August every post would have an association with this destination.
So we are going to start off with our book pick for the month Martin Amis’ ” Money: A Suicide Note” which was written by a Brit and the story takes place in London and New York.
Money tells the story of John Self, who is one of London’s top directors of commercials who decides he wants to make his first feature film- alternately titled Good Money and Bad Money. John Self is named appropriately because he quite frankly only cares about himself and money. A man with elitist, racist and sexist views spending exorbitant amounts of money on drugs, sex and food we are taken on a ride with him in his relentless pursuit of pleasure and success. Will Self get his movie made? Will his on again off again “girlfriend” Selina get him to settle down? Or will he spiral out of control and self-destruct?
In this current climate of #metoo and political correctness, this book will shock you and may also make you a little uncomfortable, but it’s a good wild ride in a weird kinda way. Published in 1984 Money is an interesting look at how this douchebag and other young rich guys like him view the world.
