WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE: BORREGO SPRINGS

For me, one of the rewarding things about traveling is unexpectedly stumbling upon a point of interest that wasn’t on your original itinerary.
I was fortunate to experience this occurrence on a recent trip from Palm Springs to San Diego. While driving through the small town of Borrego Springs in the Californian desert, I was surprised to see a life-sized serpent on the side of the road. I’m sure reading this one may be inclined to think that I was hallucinating or that I had stumbled upon some mysterious mythical land, but I assure you I hadn’t.

Anzo-Borrego Desert State Park is home to more than 130 full-sized metal sculptures depicting creatures that once roamed the Californian desert millions of years ago.
Ricardo Bracedo created life-like sculptures in motion, such as wild horses, a giant ant and scorpion preparing for battle, and a 350-foot serpent whose body seems to snake underneath the main road.

There are so many things to do and see in California I couldn’t list them all, but if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, make sure you take a trip to where the wild things are: Borrego Springs.
