BEAUTY IN RUINS: 7 WONDERFUL ABANDONED PHOTOS

There is something hauntingly beautiful about abandoned places. While some may find them creepy or something that used to be, I view them as a snapshot in time, a bridge from what it was to what it will become. We often see things in life with a finality that once something is destroyed or left to waste away that it’s the end of the story. Every abandoned place tells a story, either it’s one you’ve heard about overtime or one you’ve imagined in your head. Studying architecture in high school, I’ve walked through abandoned buildings and thought about the design aspect of a structure and also wondered about the people who roamed the halls and occupied the spaces. Why did they leave this place? Who was the last person to turn off the lights? Did someone take their last breath here? 

Throughout time cities have been burned, buildings destroyed or left to rot, but the beauty of it all is the hope of a new beginning. Someone will come along with a vision to create something new, that will have a place in a world that’s forever changing and evolving.

While on a trip to Berlin, I had the opportunity to explore some abandoned spaces. While exploring a deserted house in a residential neighborhood to walking the halls of an abandoned hospital, I was able to capture the beauty in ruins.

One of my favorite photos from the tour is this room in an abandoned hospital I titled “Love in a hopeless place.” The country is in a state of chaos, and the future may seem grim, but if we respect and love one another, we may get through it all.
