When traveling, I always find it a bonus to visit a new destination and realize that it is better than I imagined. Bergen, Norway, is a city I didn’t know I needed in my life, but I am happy to have found it. Although I only spent a little time in the small coastal town, I am eager to return and explore more of Norway. Here are a few of my highlights:
EXPLORE BRYGGEN
Known for its famous colorful wooden house lining the harbor, Bryggen (North Side of the Bay) is a popular tourist attraction for the city. It’s as if you are transported back to the 1300s when Norwegians built the area for trading.

Fjord Cruise
Venture beyond Bergen city and sail along the 17-mile Osterfjord, where you can see dramatic mountain scenery, small coastal towns, and beautiful waterfalls.

Take the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen
In the heart of Bergen, you will find Fløibanen funicular’s two carriages that have transported people to the mountain for over 100 years—offering spectacular views of the city, fjord, and mountains. There are cafes and a gift shop but more importantly, check out the troll forest. There are also trails for you to hike down from the top back to the city center.

Heit Bergen Sauna
An hour session at Heit Bergen Sauna was one of the most fun things to do in Bergen. Taking a plunge into the frigid bay followed by steam in your private sauna pod is a great way to cap off a long day of site-seeing.
